PC on tour

yeah my spec for my PSU said the same - but had little sticker on saying 230v. be warned.

what about this, removing the weight from the mainboard ?

i’d probably built my own pc flightcase, making sure all components are sort off away from each other and rubber-suspended. the tricky part is really the cpu cooler.

edit: actually with something like this http://img.directindustry.de/pdf/repository_di/6054/aluminiumprofile-17639_2b.jpg, you can easily built a frame for the inside of a flightcase, place mainboard etc. in it, and fix cpu cooler to the frame. surely, it takes a bit of planning but i guess you get something you can trust in the end.

edit2: additionaly you could mould the bottom of the mainboard in expoxy. i guess thats done to military electronics but i’m not sure about it…

ok i better stop here :)

if you want to have fun at the airport security check a bag with naked printed circuit boards always works fine.

a custom made pc-housing could be interesting also… stick a clicking alarm clock to it.

yeah, i guess the expoxy would add some quality to it :)

we had some fun (not) sending some kit to Turkey a month ago. You can’t import any used electronic kit!

and the countless fun we’ve had getting our digital spray cans into various countries! customs always love electronics inside aerosol cans.

shuttle cooling hacks:
CPU and case air flow:

PSU and case air flow:

  • putting out of the case dual-slot GPU fan(s)?
  • removing dvd drive?

@first link: idk, all that work for 3°C? is that worth it? also, it would’ve been more efficent if the sawed out the really restriciting grille, like in the second link.

I think since we’re generally not aiming for desk setups, if we have temperature issues, then opening the case, and using one of these bad boys will solve all our problems:

A mere tenner from Amazon!
:)

ok, inelegant
but even with the case on, one of these 9" fans outside is going to make the world of difference if you’re serious about cooling.

oo… we getting really innovative…
next option: ask local people for empty fridge and put your “toaster” inside :)
…with your beer

before going the ghetto-cooling way, I’d cut a hole in the side and mount the biggest stronges pc-fan i can find in there (probably a 120mm diameter thing). Not that the desk fan solution is not effective (friends of mine had one as part of a club floor. when someone took the fan away (dj possibly, to cool himself), the 6x panorama setup would crash ;-)).

Hehe, I can already see elliot’s techrider…“desk fan mandatory! will not play without! from amazon, preferably.” ;-)

DiMix: even better, put it in of those little fridges the dj’s often get for their vodka and red bull…I’d like to imagine their faces :D

@bilderbuchi

once a VJ suggested I use a pack of ice to cool down my laptop
err… hmm…no
definitely no :)

ok. here’s what I got

Whole system cost about a grand for:

  • SX58H7 PRO
  • Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz CPU
  • Corsair Force Series 3 500MB/s SSD (SSD3)
  • 8GB Corsair XMS3 DRAM 1600MHz
  • 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3
  • XFX ATI Radeon 6770 w/5 mini-dp out
  • other bits and pieces

(lots of number '3’s !!)

also for cooling, i’m curious if things like laptop coolers may help (embedded coolers designed to blow air at / normalise temperature from a hot surface)

or peltier devices patched onto your case with cpu heatsinks on the other side :)

the bottom panel of the shuttle where the cpu is can be very hot… so i think it can be useful to cool it !

probably someone tried to replace dvd drive with flat fan construction alike laptop cooler, but i cant find a good keyword for googling…any hints?

thanks io,
google gives lots of links for “5.25” System Cooling"
