PC on tour

@Cat how much are the Datapath controllers… it looks expensive.
EDIT: I have eyes… I should use them… 800£

opening the case might actually reduce the cooling effect because the casings are designe to give good airflow. That’s what people building computers have told me when they warned me of removing the sides of the case for increased cooling.

shuttle forum:

that s inside the racsen .

about pelicase, yes, they have rolls. the idea is that elliot will not hate us while touring… so avoid BIG pellicase model !

I hate everyone whilst touring, except you guys. who will always stay in my heart.

I guess the Shuttle PSU’s going to be an issue with 2 decent cards (450W?)

all day i’ve been presuming option 2
somewhat waiting to make sure I dont pass up on EyeFinity too soon
(i’m of the belief so far that 2 dual head ATI cards, does not a 4 head system make. whereas that’s tried tested and stable with NVidia)

@DiMiX : thanks for the link!
it goes to the forum section, rather than the specific post (seems to be their URL’s aren’t ‘portable’)
but I think you’re pointing to the post about best single height cards right?

i’ve both a shuttle and a asus rampage III gene and
the psu of the shuttle is crap… unstable with a GTX 280 + i7980x + 1 WD raptor@10000 rpm + 1 ssd.
especially if the electric installation is not clean (like micro power cuts…etc )i’ve tons of hardware issues… until i put an UPS…

@cat : neat!
I’ve never seen that before. I always presumed that the video-wall controllers were more prohibitively priced
I note that it’s DVI only
Interesting specs for resolution as MPixels/second

165MPixels/s per output = ~1660166060Hz (though cap is 2048x2048)
330MPixels/s input = ~ 2.65HD60Hz = ~1174117460Hz*4

circuitb: yea i know as i remeber psu on shuttle crap
last time we had to do some custom cooler for process on shuttle because cpu was covered with psu, and it was limited to 450w and you cannot buy another psu for shuttle it’s different
sugo: i’m still can consider that whatever you choose armor A30 will be a best choice of costumobility for at list a possibility to carry on tour reliable thing

that’s we use 2-d year with gene 2, only troubles with 590’s it’s overhiting with datapath & seems i don’t need pci anymore…

http://www.softlite.ca/cube-cases/ <<<<—hmm seems pretty close…

@sugokuGENKI
actually i was looking for shuttle case modding re: extra cooling, but saw there many threads related to the topics you guys discuss here… i’m also interested in shuttle config, so if you find smth interesting pls link here
p.s.anonther thread “Modifications and Quiet SFFing”:replacing fans etc.

Hmm I’m fairly sure it says VGA as well in the brochure…

Any opinions on using one of these embedded water coolers:

http://www.corsair.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/h/5/h50_cpu-cooler.png

http://www.corsair.com/cooling/hydro-series/hydro-series-h50-cpu-cooler.html

I’d generally be wary of water cooling, but perhaps with these embedded systems, there’s less to worry about?
Maybe hand luggage issues?

Empty the system when in transit?

Seems it’d solve

  • Weight of block against CPU causing leverage on motherboard when in transit (they’re much lower profile)
  • Extra heat sucked out of the small case
    Basically the idea is to get it to be more like a Shuttle

for sure not “hand luggage” item…
and CPU cooling solution only, what to do with GPU?

  • air pressure differences (low in the hold (?) / high in the cabin) might blow it open (though perhaps not if there’s no bubbles at all). Starting to definitely think this is a bad idea… :)

arse

The NXZT is too big for cabin luggage

Whereas the NXZT is

180mm (W) x 422.5mm (H) x 406mm (D)
180mm (W) x 380mm (H) x 406mm (D) (without handle)

A peli 1510 case (largest carry on) has internal dimensions:

50.1 x 27.9 x 19.3 cm

A Shuttle SX58H7 PRO (pretty much what i’m going for now)

325(L) x 208(W) x 189(H) mm

EDIT: or the ThermalTake (above)

300 x 280 x 430 mm

also doesn’t fit hand luggage

@sugokuGENKI
look at sticking out msi gtx275

@DiMiX - cool
the MSI Twin Frozr thing sticking out the side looks effective!
would need something to look after it during touring, and i presume every warranty gets voided pretty quickly
and would avoid the water cooling personally for mechanical stability / airline issues

had a depressing couple of hours finding that there’s not been any powerful single slot graphics cards since the 9800 (with at least 2 Dual Link DVI-I connectors).
(there is 1 really long 450 with DVI+DP which i’m not really fond of + a discontinued Sparkle 450 mentioned above)

The next step down is GeForce 440 (some single slots), which http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html tells me has comparable performance to my old GeForce 8800 GTS. :(!

  • EyeFinity is out the window since there’s no more 5870’s available (check [ATI Eyefinity / DisplayPort](ATI Eyefinity / DisplayPort))

So with a shuttle, we’re stuck with 2 real outputs (3 if you count the ATI cards, but i have had a bad experience trying to get 3 VGA’s off one of those with TripleHead2Go’s. and more if you consider the somewhat bonkers ‘cut a hole out of your case’ route)

  • NZXT doesn’t fit in hand luggage. so stuck with Shuttle methinks
    (Shuttle’s also built well, and cools the innards comparatively well)

So I’m thinking of not getting any graphics cards for the time being, and using my old 8400 + 7950 cards until something more suitable comes out (+possibly a 430 or similar)

make sure ya PSU doesn’t just take 230/240. I had some fun with that once in the US. I’d checked the spec label on side of it prior and read 110-240v but upon closer inspection it had a tiny sticker near the IEC inlet saying 230v!

@xd_nitro:
for the Shuttle Pro:

POWER 500W
Input:100 - 240V AC
Support 80 PLUS Bronze

They’re from Taiwain, but I presume most customers are in the US.
Admittedly, the Shuttle’s are really smart design, and I’m a bit ashamed to admit, I presumed they were a US company

Other news: That Sparkle (or any other GeForce 450 single slot) isn’t available

Slowly descending into graphics hell… :)

(+gulp!! GeForce 590 = £600. that’s more the than a VVVV license!!! and it gobbles up to 375Watts)

Some optimism about putting the PC in the hold:
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/75-40-desktop-plane

That’s where a Peli foam case is going to particularly come in handy!
