Motor via DMX

Hello Folks!

Some time passed since my last entry. Meanwhile you have set up a new homepage and a new version of your fabulous toolkit.
I am still working on my sensitive architecture, as discribed on the old forum.

I am probably going for the solution with the USB/DMX-512 Control Box by Cinetix. I want to control some motors (drill machines) via dmx dimmers.
But before I am going to buy that thing, I have to know:

Do I have to write any kind of driver to make it work with vvvv? (because I don´t
have any programing skills) Is it the Plug and play solution I am longing for?

This thing is conected to my pc via USB?! What is meant by: "it is fully controlled
via RS232 and a virtual COM-Port that is available after installing the “virtual-
COM-Port-driver”
Do I need a RS232 Port?

What would you say is the best solution for my purpose out of the enumerated
http://vvvv.org/tiki-index.php?page=HowTo+DMX
possibilities?

regards

pez

hi pez,

(1) as written then: make sure your drill machines actually do work with a dimmer. do you need speed control or just on/off

(2) i´ll try to clarify the text at http://vvvv.org/tiki-index.php?page=HowTo+DMX .

(a) dmx is usually very foolproof and plug&play
(a) i recommend the soundlight usbdmx.
(b) no, you dont need a physical rs232 port. the usb driver installs a virtual rs232 port.

Well, dear Pez,

As I understood you do not need a physical RS232 port; you only need a Virtual Com Port driver (somewhere here is the information where to get this, don’t know where, do a search) and a patch communicating via that RS232 node with the virtual com port.

MSBERGER patched something that you could need.
I wonder more about the drilling machines:
are they 230 Volts?
are you sure that you can control their RPMs simply via dimming?
give it a try before you buy an expensive dimmerpack!

@kalle

quoting the prof;

a.1 dmx is usually very foolproof and plug&play

that’s an advantage and for the same reasons it s*cks…

a.2 i recommend the soundlight usbdmx2
me too. no personal experiences with that cinetix thing though but what i heard/read about it must be good.

just my …

Hi Pez,

as Kalle already mentioned I did some small patches for the USB/DMX-512 Control Box by Cinetix.

At the moment they cam be found in the old forum http://vvvv.org/board/index.php?showtopic=1079

If I find some time bext weekend I will transfer the patches to the new site.

Hello Guys!

I try to clear the points I have:

Originally my intention was to control the RPMs as well. Is there a “cheaper” way to just control on/off?

They are 230V. I tryed the dimmer from kemo http://www.kemo-electronic.com/de/module/m012/index.htm . It works with a manual poti. It did work well!

Can I use the patch for the USB/DMX-512 Control Box by Cinetix for the soundlight usbdmx2 as well?

Am I able to control things like moving heads with the soundlight usbdmx2 as well?

thanks for all replies

congratulations, then a dimmerpack will help you

no. but you don’t need any patches for the USBDMX2,
there are hard-code-nodes in vvvv since beta 7.4
DMX (Devices Soundlight)

Am I able to control things like moving heads with the soundlight usbdmx2 as
well?

the DMX keeps the same…
