i read the posts aboput triple head cards. I want to play a 5760x1080 pixel video with it. is this possible on a current i7 system?

Smooth video depend on the gpu, the CPU, the chosen codec and very important the speed of your disk/ssd. Not really on the triplehead.

if you are able to get some.
depending of course on codec (cineform or h264) it shouldn’t be a problem.
you will need some active adaptors from Displayport to Duallink-DVI.
make sure that you are able to provide sufficient USB-power supply to each of those devices.
