Couldn’t you just use multiple XPath nodes, like in the XPath help file?
you could remove the headers of the xml files, concatenate them into one big xml structure (perhaps enclosed by some more brackets) and add some headers to make them wellformed again.
if xml would be less stuipd (or the xpath node could deal with less wellformed strings), you could eliminate step 1+3 and it would be fun.
