Exporting without opening patch

I have done some experimentation with exporting an app and one thing that makes me wonder is why I need to open a patch in order to export it.
Why can’t i just in export window select the patch I want to export? I can close the patch while exporting anyway, so why the need to open it in the first place? If the patch is taxing on the system, it will export much faster if it is not running while exporting.

Could the exporter be a stand alone application?
